International Subscriber Dialing
International Subscriber Dialing (ISD) or International Direct Dialing (IDD) are the logical extensions of STD. These services enables subscribers to dial their own international calls, without asking the operator to connect them to the other phones when making trunk calls.
Of course local calls through Telephones
in the PSTN do not have this problem. These services are wonderful in their application and have worked significantly to reduce the load on telephone operators and divided the traffic of trunk calls.
It is clear that ISD or IDD are international systems and many countries need to come to a common points; and this is where, the very beginning of the introduction of this system had some problems in sorting out the charge that will be levied on calls by different countries!
How ISD works
The working of ISD calls is simple and easy to understand. Different countries have an agreement through which, every country has been provided with a
country code
—CC! For example, France has
CC—33, the UK has
CC—44, Israel has CC—972, the USA has CC—1, and India has CC—91. Register-translators or RT handles the ISD calls at the subscriber’s local exchange. This is somewhat similar to ordinary STD calls. To make an ISD call, the subscriber dials an initial digit 0 to gain access to this equipment, then the CC code follows, which is suffixed by STD code, and the then the telephone number!
When a subscriber dials the ISD prefix, the originating RT examines the country code to check its validity and to determine the appropriate metering rate. If everything is fine with the technical specification, the call is completed!
How to use ISD effectively
Among the benefits that ISD call facility provides, there are certain threats associated with this facility, and these problems can trouble you much! There are certain people, who somehow, through unknown technology, hacks your telephone number and use the ISD facility for their personal use. This can unnecessarily increase your bills for the calls that you have not made. Almost all the exchanges of individual countries provide locking systems or some other facilities to stop this hacking sort of thing of ISD or IDD facility. You should make it clear that you are using this facility—it is fairly simple to use, as you have to dial certain numbers for locking and unlocking this facility. These numbers are provided by the exchanges that offer this type of facility!
